2023 Canadian Grand Prix Race Report

Win 100 for Red Bull, Max Verstappen equals Ayrton Senna, Fernando Alonso Lewis Hamilton make the podium, Ferrari get the strategy right for once and is Sergio Perez's time at Red Bull coming to an end?

Max Verstappen wins! (Again)

Max Verstappen won his 41st win in Formula 1 which equals F1 legend Ayrton Senna's win record. Verstappen's win also achieved Red Bull's 100th win in the sport which means 41% of Red Bull's wins have been achieved by Verstappen! Adrian Newey joined Verstappen on the podium as Newey has now contributed to 200 wins in the sport.

Is Perez's seat at risk?

Sergio Perez was knocked out of Q2 again this weekend and when he found himself 6th behind Ferrari, he couldn't catch them despite having the faster car. Perez did get the fastest lap of the race with a 1.14.481 which was previously held by Lewis Hamilton until Perez pitted for softs with 2 laps remaining.

Hamilton vs Alonso

At the Canadian Grand Prix, we once again saw an enthralling battle between the two F1 legends of Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton for 2nd place. Alonso started the race second and Lewis Hamilton started behind him in third. Alonso had a poor start and Hamilton was past going into turn 1. On lap 23, Alonso got back past Lewis but with 10 laps remaining, Alonso was managing a brake issue which resulted in Hamilton closing back in on the Spaniard but as Hamilton almost got within DRS range, Alonso began to extend the gap again.

Driver of the Day, Albon!

Alexander Albon was awarded driver of the day after his superb drive defending cars behind him on new tyres. Albon pitted when the safety car came out on lap 12 and whilst others pitted again around lap 40, Albon opted to stay out and with his newly upgraded Williams, he was able to defend those behind him to finish P7. This also means Williams have moved above Alpha Tauri in the Constructors Championship.

Ferrari get the strategy right (for once)

I am sure everyone is aware by now of the interesting strategy calls Ferrari have made over the past year but for once they got it right. Charles Leclerc started 10th and Carlos Sainz started 11th and when the Safety Car came out on lap 12, Ferrari decided to not pit their 2 cars and in doing so found themselves in 4th and 5th. When everyone pitted for a second time around lap 40, Ferrari had pitted just before and they were back in 4th and 5th once again. Leclerc finished 4th and Sainz finished 5th.

Disaster for Russell

George Russell was running 4th and putting pressure on Alonso ahead until on lap 12 he hit the wall heavily damaging the rear wheel of his car and broke his front wing. However, Russell was able to continue despite running last for many laps. Russell managed to work his way up to 8th but on lap 55, Russell was told to retire as he had a rear brake issue as a result of the crash he had on lap 12.
