Track limits have been a talking point amongst the Formula 1 fan base as well as the F1 paddock after qualifying and practice saw many times deleted as a result.
Firstly, the FIA have said the track limit is the white line and if you have none of your car on the right side of the white line, your lap time will be deleted. This resulted in a mixed qualifying grid as Vettel moved from P17 to P20 and Sergio Perez from P4 to P13.
Sergio Perez had all of his Q3 times deleted as well as his last Q2 time which left the Mexican P13. Red Bull team boss Christian Horner added on the penalty calling it “a bit harsh”.
Kevin Magnussen qualified an impressive P6 after Perez’s penalty but said “It is pretty annoying because it is never great when the cars can naturally run wider than you are allowed to.” He was overall pretty unimpressed by track limits.
Also in the Formula 2 Sprint Race, a number of drivers received black and white flags and 5-second penalties for exceeding track limits.
Max Verstappen also revealed he was “on edge with track limits” on his Pole lap on Friday.
