The Winners and Losers of Piastri joining Williams

Recently, strong rumours have emerged of Piastri reportedly joining the Williams team for a 2 year loan.

The Winners

Alpine

Alpine are definitely one of the big winners in this move as it allows their big talent get an F1 seat for 2023 (which they were unable to achieve in 2022).

After winning the F2 championship in 2021, Alpine were hoping to find the Australian a seat but was unable to do so.

Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso’s seat was at risk for 2023 as Alpine had Oscar Piastri aged 21, as a reserve driver and first time driver Fernando Alonso aged 40 racing. Alpine revealed that either Piastri or Alonso would get the seat next year and now that Piastri is going to Williams, this allows Alonso to renew his contract.

Williams

Williams are a big winner in this deal as current driver, Nicholas Latifi, has had an underwhelming start to the season and rumours have been going around the paddock of him being replace for the 2023 season by either Nyck De Vries or Oscar Piastri.

Williams are also rumoured to be using the Renault engine next year as part of the deal with Alpine for Oscar Piastri.

Oscar Piastri

Oscar Piastri is an obvious winner in this situation as he was unable to get a seat for the 2022 season after winning for Formula 2 championship in 2021.

The Losers

Nicholas Latifi

Current Williams driver Nicholas Latifi is likely to lose his seat to Oscar Piastri and will likely be without an F1 seat for the 2023 season.

Nyck De Vries

Nyck De Vries has been rumoured of getting an F1 seat for the last few years ever since he won the Formula 2 championship in 2019. However, it seems he will miss out again on an F1 seat again in 2023.

Mercedes

If the rumours become true of Williams moving to Renault engines, Mercedes will lose connection with the Williams team and will be unable to have a choice in any of the teams seats at all.
